Spend a Day in Mission Bay

Pacific Beach is close to Mission Beach and the Mission Bay area, where you’ll find many activities to keep you busy during your vacation. SeaWorld San Diego is at the southern end of the Mission Bay area. You can go east and visit Fiesta Island Park or west for Belmont Park and Mission Beach. In Ocean Beach on the other side of the entrance channel, you can take your furry companions for some fun at Ocean Beach Dog Park.

Depending on where you stay in Pacific Beach, you may be able to reach some of these places on foot or rent a bicycle to get around. You can find affordable Pacific Beach hotels on Hotel Planner and stay in the Crown Point Park Area to enjoy easy access to Mission Bay and its many restaurants, bars, and attractions.

Try out a New Water Sport

You’ll spend plenty of time on the beaches while you’re here, but that doesn’t mean you have to settle for swimming and sunbathing. Head south from the city center toward Mission Bay. There you’ll find dozens of spots offering equipment rentals, lessons, and tours for a few sports you could try. A few companies offering rentals are:

  • Snorkel San Diego Scuba: Pick up some snorkeling and scuba rentals, sign up for a couple lessons, and take a guided tour of the nearby marine refuge area.
  • Board It Forward: Rent a paddleboard and sign up to learn how to stand up surf in the Pacific Ocean.
  • Mission Bay Aquatic Center: Rent a paddleboard or kayak with no experience necessary. You’ll only sit through a brief orientation. You can rent windsurfing equipment, sailboats, and similar items after completing a two-hour orientation.

Visit La Jolla Cove

There are plenty of good beach spots in and around Pacific Beach. But one of the most scenic spots nearby is La Jolla Cove. This is roughly a 20-minute drive from the Pacific Beach city center. La Jolla Cove is a lovely place for swimming and is one of the most photographed beaches in Southern California. The waters also attract snorkelers and scuba divers, so if you’re looking for a beach for either of these activities, go to La Jolla.

Have a Sunset Meal on the Boardwalk

End your day with a meal overlooking the Mission Beach Boardwalk. This is another excellent spot for photos, especially as the sun sets. Walk the boardwalk to look out over the glimmering Pacific waters, and if you feel like staying out a bit later, turn back for some barhopping in the Mission Bay area.

Pacific Beach is an amazing location where you’ll never be bored. Add some of these spots during your visit to perfect your Southern California vacation.
